Encouraging focus and calm in kids using images, colors, sounds & music
The L.A.U.G.H.® App is an evidence-based app designed to help relax, focus and concentrate, increasing creativity, self-esteem and imagination. L.A.U.G.H.® stands for Let Art Unleash Great Happiness –through creative expression, focus, mindfulness and engagement.
The app combines visual arts, music and breathing to create calming and positive energies for its users. The app is ideal for all environments from classrooms to playrooms to bedrooms.
“Children using the app exhibited much great concentration than when using comparable entertainment apps.” Dimitri A. Christakis, MD, MPH, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
The L.A.U.G.H.® App is available for download in the Apple store and currently is part of a pilot program in partnership with Seattle’s Madrona Elementary School and the University of Washington College of Education.
Children learn breath awareness by following Ambi the Ant as she tosses a ball into the air. By focusing on methodical breathing, distractions disappear and children become engaged and aware of their mind and body.
Ambi the Ant teaches children a new way to slow down and see shapes of everyday objects. As kids follow along, they’re reminded to breathe, and the shapes come to life!
Children continue their drawing adventure by exploring more fun objects, or making new ones of their own from pictures on the iPad or taken with the camera.
The L.A.U.G.H.® App has recently completed testing with Seattle Children’s Research Institute. Working with the internationally recognized Dimitri A. Christakis, MD, MPH, Director of the Center for Child Health, Behavior and Development, the team at Children’s conducted evidence-based formative research to support the app’s development. The research team tested a variety of approaches, measuring effects on physiological markers of relaxation and concentration. Results show significant cognitive engagement in users, as well as increased focus and concentration.
“The L.A.U.G.H.® App is distinguished from virtually all existing health apps,” said Dr. Christakis. “Our preliminary data demonstrate that children using The L.A.U.G.H.® App exhibited much greater concentration than when using comparable entertainment apps.”
We call the L.A.U.G.H.® App The Un-App App® because it embraces the younger generation’s use of technology while carefully orchestrating the use of images, colors, sounds and music – all with the goal of encouraging positivity and calm.
