Encouraging focus and calm in kids using images, colors, sounds & music
In our world of multi-tasking and over-stimulation, children are spending unprecedented amounts of time playing on devices. All this screen time can leave kids feeling anxious. The L.A.U.G.H. App combines visual arts, music, movement and breathing in an evidence-based app designed to help kids relax, focus and concentrate, increasing creativity and self-esteem.
Children learn breath awareness by following Ambi the Ant as she tosses a ball into the air. By focusing on methodical breathing, distractions disappear, and children become engaged and aware of their mind and body.
Ambi teaches children a new way to see shapes as she explores the shape of an apple. As kids follow along, they’re reminded to breathe, and the shape comes to life!
Children continue their drawing adventure by exploring more fun objects, or making new ones of their own from pictures on the iPad or taken with the camera.
The L.A.U.G.H. App is an evidence-based app designed to help kids relax, focus and concentrate, increasing creativity and self-esteem. Developed by The Catherine Mayer Foundation, The L.A.U.G.H. App combines visual arts, music, movement and breathing to create calming and positive energies for its users.
The L.A.U.G.H. App has recently completed testing with Seattle Children’s Research Institute. Working with the internationally recognized Dimitri A. Christakis, MD, MPH, Director of the Center for Child Health, Behavior and Development, the team at Children’s conducted evidence-based formative research to support the app’s development. The research team tested a variety of approaches, measuring effects on physiological markers of relaxation and concentration. Results show significant cognitive engagement in users, as well as increased focus and concentration.
“The L.A.U.G.H. App is distinguished from virtually all existing health apps,” said Dr. Christakis. “Our preliminary data demonstrate that children using The L.A.U.G.H. App exhibited much greater concentration than when using comparable entertainment apps.”
We call the L.A.U.G.H. App The Un-App App® because it embraces the younger generation’s use of technology while carefully orchestrating the use of images, colors, sounds and music – all with the goal of encouraging positivity and calm.
